The Unreality-SF.net Story of the Year Poll

After two weeks of nominating, voting, unexpected campaigns on LiveJournal, attempts from naughty people to rig the result, our discovery of a series called iCarly (it sounds charming), and really bad jokes about the word "pulp", the second Story of the Year Poll is over!

3166 votes were cast during the last week, and the results are as follows:

"My grateful thanks to everyone who nominated and voted for The Never-Ending Sacrifice. I loved writing this book, and I'm so pleased that people have enjoyed reading it. It's great that older shows like DS9 can still inspire affection and interest. Thanks also to the good people of Unreality-SF.net for their hard work organising the poll and for running such a consistently interesting, high-quality site. Kudos to my fellow shortlisted writers, who - in comics, audiobooks, novels, and production narratives - prove the diversity and creativity of tie-in writing." - Una McCormack, Winner

"Thanks to everyone who voted. I'm really pleased you enjoyed In The Shadows. Thanks also to Eve [Myles] for a fantastic performance and to everyone involved in the production - especially Michael Stevens." - Joseph Lidster, Runner Up

(
Breakdown: The Never-Ending Sacrifice - 603 votes, 19%; In the Shadows - 556 votes, 18%; Heart of the Dragon - 498 votes, 16%; The Final Chapter - 420 votes, 13%; D'Argo's Lament - 354 votes, 11%; The Road - 176 votes, 6%; Losing the Peace - 170 votes, 5%; Precipice - 154 votes, 5%; The Angel of Scutari - 123 votes, 4%; Prisoner of the Daleks - 112 votes, 4%)

Star Trek novel wins for the second year running! Sadly, the popularity of The Never-Ending Sacrifice pushed its Trek stablemates Precipice and Losing the Peace aside: in the nominations stage, where multiple titles could be chosen, Star Trek stories were often nominated together, but when we forced you to choose just one in the voting stage, it was Una McCormack's Deep Space Nine book which won.

In the Shadows, which came lower down the table during nominations, was given a massive boost by enthusiastic Torchwood fans during voting, and comes a worthy second. Heart of the Dragon, in third place, has been available for a matter of weeks, so it's a tribute to the quality of Keith R.A. DeCandido's writing and the passion of the Supernatural fanbase that it fared so well. The same goes for Simon Guerrier's only-just-released The Road, in a respectable sixth place.

DeCandido's second entry in the top ten, the Farscape comic D'Argo's Lament, achieved fifth place. The Final Chapter was the only non-fiction story to make the shortlist, and had its place in the vote questioned by some USF readers, but impressively managed fourth place overall, beating the other two Doctor Who choices - The Angel of Scutari and Prisoner of the Daleks - into ninth and tenth positions.

Huge congratulations to all the authors whose work made the shortlist, and thanks to everyone who nominated or voted in the poll, for making it such a success. If you've been with us for the last two years, thanks for your support, and if you're a new visitor, we hope you'll stick around.

... Same time next year?
