JENS
(Writer, March 2008+)

BIOGRAPHY

Jens Deffner was born 1979 in Germany. He was a casual Star Trek viewer since TNG began airing, but didn't become a dedicated fan until he began to read the novels in the late nineties. At first he only read the German translations, but when the number of translations declined he switched over to reading the original English novels, and he never regretted leaving the sometimes-sloppy translations behind. DS9 is his favourite Star Trek series, but he enjoys to read about any incarnation of the franchise.

His flash fiction story God's Ways, co-written with Dayton Ward, can be found on DZ Allen's Muzzle Flash.

JENS'S RATING SYSTEM

He looks at four points when reviewing a book:

1) Story - Does it work as it was intended? Is it well thought-through? Is it believable?

2) Characterisation & character development - Do the characters shown in the novel fit what we have seen on screen? How well the new characters are fleshed out?

3) Originality - Is the story fresh and new or just the thousandth reiteration of the same story?

4) Writing style - How is the story written? Is it so interesting you doesn’t even notice the time flying by, or do you need a lot of caffeine to stay awake?

The percentage rating is a mix of those four points, and simply the fun he had while reading the story.

The scores can roughly be broken down to this:
 >95% : (nearly) perfect story
 >85% : very good / excellent story
 >75% : good story
 >65% : solid, okay story
 >50% : average story
 >35% : barely average story
